Moscow
Moscow’s Living Museums
In many global capitals, historic hotels are simply modern buildings with a few old photos in the lobby. In Moscow, the concept of a “Historic Hotel” is taken literally. Here, you don’t just stay in a room; you stay inside a protected monument of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Era.
For the traveler who appreciates Art Nouveau architecture and the heavy, gilded atmosphere of the “Silver Age,” these three legendary hotels offer a portal into a bygone Moscow.

The Metropol
An Art Nouveau Masterpiece
If there is one hotel that defines the Moscow skyline, it is the Metropol. Completed in 1905, it was conceived by the industrialist Savva Mamontov as a “Palace of the Arts,” and it remains the largest extant example of Art Nouveau in the city. With a strong 4.6 rating on TripAdvisor based on 4,354 reviews, this property stands out as one of the top choices in the city, ranking 7th out of 536 hotels in Moscow. Guests consistently highlight the overall quality of their stay, making it a highly regarded option for travelers seeking comfort and reliability.
The exterior is famous for the massive “Princess of Dreams” mosaic panel by Mikhail Vrubel, which wraps around the upper floors. Inside, the Grand Hall features a spectacular stained-glass roof designed by the legendary Vladimir Shukhov.
While some guests mention minor drawbacks such as noise insulation, maintenance concerns, and a few facility limitations, these issues do little to overshadow the overall experience. With high guest satisfaction and an impressive ranking, the hotel remains a solid and well-recommended choice for visitors to Moscow. This is the setting of the famous novel A Gentleman in Moscow. Walking through the Fountain Hall during breakfast—accompanied by a live harpist—is perhaps the most atmospheric experience in the city.
Tip: Look for the room numbers; no two suites in the Metropol are identical, as the original architects treated every room as a unique gallery space.
Moscow is a vibrant city where visitors can rely on knowledgeable guides, an efficient public transport system, and a population that is generally helpful and accustomed to tourists. The city is considered safe, especially in central areas and around major attractions, with clear signage and regular security presence. Among the main advantages are its rich history, impressive architecture, and easy mobility, while potential downsides include crowded areas, language barriers outside tourist zones, and busy traffic during peak hours. Overall, Moscow offers a well-organized and rewarding experience for travelers.
The Savoy Moscow
Victorian Elegance in the Heart of the City
While the Metropol is a monument to Russian Modernism, The Savoy—opened in 1913—is a tribute to European Victorian and Neoclassical grandeur. Rated 4.3 on TripAdvisor from 959 guest reviews, this hotel holds a solid position at 25th out of 536 properties in Moscow. The majority of visitors report a positive experience, placing it among the city’s reliable accommodation options.
The Savoy Restaurant is a masterpiece of the Rococo style. Its ceiling is an irregular assembly of mirrors and intricate stucco moldings that make it feel like you are dining inside a giant jewel box.
With only 67 rooms, The Savoy feels far more intimate and “boutique” than its neighbours. It has historically been the preferred stay for artists and performers from the nearby Bolshoi Theatre. Although some guests mention noise isolation issues and maintenance-related facility concerns, these points are generally seen as minor. Overall, the hotel delivers a good and satisfying stay, making it a dependable choice for travelers visiting Moscow.
Tip: Keep an eye out for the Salamander symbol throughout the hotel. It was the logo of the insurance company that originally built the property, and it is woven into the carpets and carved into the marble.

Moscow offers a rich mix of food and drinks, from traditional Russian dishes to modern international cuisine, with options ranging from street cafés to upscale restaurants. The city is filled with iconic tourist attractions, including historic landmarks, museums, and lively public squares. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of things to do, such as cultural shows, river walks, shopping, and nightlife, making Moscow an engaging destination for all types of travelers.

Richter Hotel
The New Heritage Hub
With a 4.4 rating on TripAdvisor based on 11 reviews, this hotel holds a position of 241st out of 536 properties in Moscow. Early guest feedback reflects a generally positive impression and a promising overall experience. For a completely different take on “Original Moscow,” look to the Richter. This isn’t a massive hotel; it is a 19th-century aristocratic mansion in the Zamoskvorechye district that has been meticulously restored by a group of creative enthusiasts.
It doubles as a creative residence. The hotel features only seven rooms, but it includes an art gallery, a library, and a printing workshop. The restoration left the original frescoes and gypsum ceilings exposed, blending them with minimalist, modern furniture.
While the number of reviews is still limited, the feedback so far is consistently good. Overall, the hotel shows strong potential and stands as a pleasant option for travelers seeking a comfortable stay in Moscow.. This is “Bohemian Luxury.” It’s where you’ll find the city’s young designers and intellectuals. It feels less like a hotel and more like staying at the private estate of a very wealthy, very artistic friend.
Tip: Their “Associative Cuisine” restaurant uses only local, seasonal products from Russian farms, offering a modern twist on traditional flavours.
Traveler Advisory :
Currently, the UK FCDO advises against all travel to Russia due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. For those who must travel (such as for essential family or business reasons), please note that international Visa and Mastercard cards issued outside of Russia do not work in the country. You must carry sufficient cash or use local payment systems
